MITRE/CAASD's performs a broad range of activities in modernizing aviation ground systems throughout the world. Working internationally, we obtain insights into global modernization which we can bring to bear on domestic system evolution. Conversely, because we are so deeply involved in modernizing the National Airspace System (NAS), we can offer insights and solid experience with track record in the international arena.
The aviation economy rests on the scheduled operations of airlines and cargo carriers. They, in turn, must move people and goods within the U.S. aviation system. That system is built upon an infrastructure to conduct operations. The NAS Infrastructure, comprising communications, navigation, and surveillance systems, and NAS resources such as airports and airspace, provide the foundation of the NAS. NAS operations guide aircraft from origin to destination safely and as efficiently as possible; operations are supported by procedures, decision support systems, airspace architecture and aircraft systems.
These systems are undergoing revolutionary changes, but
in a contained, manageable process of evolutionary development that allows
the aviation system to move forward while at the same time providing the
services the users have come to expect. Evolving the
NAS infrastructure to accommodate users' desires for more efficient flight
will ultimately mean changes to the way air traffic control is practiced.
New navigation capabilities will result in new traffic flows presaging
changes in the structure of the airspace.
